Happy Cassette Store Day

It's the first annual International Cassette Store Day today. Cassettes have been seeing a bit of a revival lately among the generation too young for getting nostalgic about vinyl, but old enough to have rewound a tape with a pencil. A lot of people don't seem to get it, as the cassette format arguably doesn't contribute anything sonically to music like some claim vinyl does.

Personally, I'm not hugely worried about pristine sound quality. I'd rather listen to a brilliant song that was recorded on a Tascam 4-track in someone's bedroom, than this. 'Audiophile' sounds a bit sinister anyway...

I like cassettes, maybe mostly for the nostalgia, but increasingly because the bands who release their music on them are often kinda good. There's loads of great grungy, lo-fi stuff cropping up everywhere. Dolfinz from Stonehaven for example, with this new release for Cassette Store Day.

I love that. Hope they release the MP3s. I don't have a tape deck.

If you're interested in seeing what bands and small labels are doing with cassettes these days, here's a reddit sub dedicated to 'cassette culture'.
